Real reason behind the Impacts of Extreme Event that are becoming the new normal
The impacts of extreme events like Flood,Waterlogging,Landslides etc. are now a regular phenomennon all over the World. Nowadays these events are considered as "certain" rather than "uncertain". Why?
Landslides
30 July 2024: Kerala Landslide in India
11 Aug 2024: Himachal Pradesh Landslide in India
Flood
Germany – Thousands Evacuate Floods in Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg
Afghanistan – Devastating Flash Floods Claim Hundreds of Lives in Northern Provinces
Oman – Dozens Rescued, 12 Dead After Heavy Rain Triggers Flash Floods
Uruguay – Thousands Evacuate as River Reaches Record High in Florida Department
Argentina – Flood Chaos in Buenos Aires After 130mm of Rain in 24 Hours
Water Logging
12 Aug, 2024 : Bengaluru waterlogging
12 Aug, 2024: Gurugram waterlogging
List is unending.
For the last five years or more, June to October can be confidently bookmarked for such extreme events.
"Extreme events that were once considered rarest of the rare phenomenon that cause widespread disruptions are now increasingly commonplace and regarded as normal occurrences."
"What do you believe is the primary cause for this?"
Elnino/La Nina Effect?
Impact of Climate Change?
Impact of Rapid Urbanization?
Deforestation Result?
Uncontrolled extraction of natural resources?
I think none of them are the real cause behind the climatic abnormalities.
There are two aspects to this. One is the effect,i.e., flood, waterlogging, landslides and another is the cause,i.e., heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, cyclones, hurricanes etc.
In this article, I will discuss the real cause of the effects, not just the effects themselves.
The real reason for flooding, waterlogging and landslides is the same. The main culprit of these vulnerabilities is the congestion or clogging of the drainage network of a watershed; natural or artificial.
Consider the example of the human body's arteries or blood vessels. If these arteries become clogged due to the buildup of fats, blood is unable to flow through them. This can result in a compromised quantity or flow rate of blood, leading to potential health issues like :
Backflow of blood that may lead to heart or cerebral attacks
Ruptures of the blood vessels.
Blood spill
Similarly, if the drainage network or part of it is blocked with organic or inorganic waste products/eroded soils/debris etc., the water will fail to flow smoothly due to this clogging of materials in the flow path of water.
As a result here also backflow, rupture in the flow channels or canals and flooding can take place.
Backflow of water is the main reason for waterlogging. Rupture in the flow path often causes landslides and the spilling of water from its storage is what we call as flood.
The problem is when extreme events like thunderstorms or cyclones or hurricanes take place followed by heavy rainfalls the amount of water becomes high but the path to carry out the water is not sufficient.
So the result is the events that I had mentioned in the beginning of the article.
To mitigate the frequent occurrences of flooding, waterlogging, and landslides, we need to desilt and expand our drainage system. By desilting the existing network, we can clear blockages, and by expanding the network, we can provide an additional path for excess water to flow.
The problem is our governments have turned blind to such proposals.
What do you think we can do now to solve this problem? Write in the comments.
