Five free statistics software that you can use in Water Resource Research

Statistics is an essential part of water resource research. But presently all the popular statistical software is expensive and for a student or individual researcher, it is nearly impossible to procure such software. For example, the cost of the most popular statistical software is as given below :

  1. Statista($59 per month,billed annually)

  2. Sigma XL : $299.00 USD(Single Licence)

  1. IBM SPSS Statistics($99 per user per month)

  2. JMP : $1200

  3. Minitab : $1610.00 USD(Single User Annual Subscription)

There are many other paid software programs that offer various statistical analyses, such as Origin Pro and Stata, but their prices vary depending on location, number of users, and other factors. That is why they ask you to request a quote, and upon receipt of your request, they will provide you with a quotation based on your specific requirement.

An individual researcher, on the other hand, cannot afford such a high price. As a result, we must rely on grants or institutes to obtain this software. However, if you are willing to give up some of the functionality provided by the paid alternatives, the following list of five software can meet your analytical needs without cost.

Five Free Statistical Analysis Software

Here is the list of free software with limited functionalities compared to that of the paid alternatives that you can use for any kind of research including water resource research:

1)JASP:

JASP is an open-source project supported by the University of Amsterdam. It offers :

  • Dynamic update of all results

  • Spreadsheet layout and an intuitive drag-and-drop interface

  • Progressive disclosure for increased understanding

  • Annotated output for communicating your results

The features offered by this software can challenge any of the paid software. It is still open source and can be downloaded for free.

2)BrightStat:

It is a free online statistics calculator. BrightStat offers :

  • Explanations and examples of non-parametric and parametric tests

  • An online statistics calculator for doing your own statistical analysis and data visualization, including many non-parametric and parametric tests and fully customizable graphs (bar plot, column plot, line plot, area plot, boxplot, scatterplot, pie plot, histogram, etc.)

  • Visualizer for easy calculation of critical values and p-values for most important probability distributions in statistics as the standard normal distribution, Chi-squared distribution, Student's t distribution, and Fisher's F distribution

“Since 15. July BrightStat is completely for free again. Every account has a maximum of 20 file slots on the server and has access to all features of BrightStat.com”..according to the home page of BrightStat.

3) MicrOsiris :

It's a full-featured statistical and data management package for Windows. The University of Michigan developed it. A comparison of this software with SAS and SPSS features can be found here.

4)Real Statistics Using Excel:

This is not a single software package. But this is a site that shares Excel Templates through which you can perform simple to complex statistical analyses. For example(directly copied from their home page) :

  • Real Statistics Resource Pack: contains a variety of supplemental functions and data analysis tools not provided by Excel. These complement the standard Excel capabilities and make it easier for you to perform the statistical analyses described in the rest of this website.

  • Real Statistics Examples Workbooks: 14 Excel workbooks can be downloaded for free. These contain worksheets that implement the various tests and analyses described in the rest of this website.

  • Quick Access Toolbar (QAT): One way to access the Real Statistics data analysis tools is via the QAT. To accomplish this you need to download a file named RS_QAT.xlsm. Click here to download this file.

5)Dataplot:

It is a free, public-domain software system that runs on multiple platforms (Unix/Linux, MacOS, and Windows 7/8/10). which offers :

  • Scientific visualization,

  • Statistical analysis,

  • and Non-linear modeling.

The researcher and analyst who was involved in the identification, designing, simulation, evaluation, tracking, and enhancement of scientific and engineering processes is the target Dataplot user. James J. Filliben published the first version in 1978 and has continued to improve it up to the present.

After downloading this software go through its extensive tutorials especially:

  1. Getting Into and Out of Dataplot

  2. Setting Your Graphics Devices and Printing Graphics

  3. A Simple Example

  4. 4 Typical Problems

Please keep in mind that because the above software is distributed under an open source licence, its functionality is not guaranteed and may contain multiple bugs. However, I have only chosen programmes that are known to have a low error rate.
